The luxurious Ritz Carlton Hotel in Orlando, FL was the setting when 200 executives from Lockheed Martin participated in a fantastic version of our Bike-a-Thon Charity Workshop. The massive size of the group didn’t leave a whole lot of room to maneuver, but that didn’t stop anyone from going all out to compete, learn some advanced teamwork skills, and hustle up no less than 34 brand new bicycles to donate to The Heart of Florida United Way. It was a gratifying experience for everyone involved, with a huge group truly becoming a team and local children reaping tangible benefits as well.
A Huge Group that Knew How to Manage Itself
Efficiency was key with such a large group, but the Lockheed Martin execs were way ahead of us in that regard. They came into the day energetic but organized, a combination that made it easy for our facilitators to divide them up into teams and get things rolling quickly.
We started things off with warm-up activities that were designed and staged with Lockheed Martin’s specific teamwork goals firmly in mind. These activities included games like Air Counting, Say What I Say, and Dice Prediction. There was a lot of friendly competition as the different teams vied to outdo one another, but we could tell how much they were learning about communication and teamwork along the way.
By the time we got to the parts earning phase, the teams had really started clicking. There were a lot of smiles and enthusiasm as we approached the assembly stage, but what really stood out were the subtle ways in which these seasoned executives improved on their teamwork skills in the midst of so much generosity and fun.
The Heart of Florida United Way: An Easy Choice that Added Extra Incentive
The way the Lockheed Martin team went about choosing their charity told us everything we needed to know about their character. When we asked them which local organization they’d like to donate the assembled bikes to, their answer was quick and unequivocal: wherever there’s the most need. This touching gesture made it easy to choose The Heart of Florida United Way and had everyone inspired from the get-go.
Not surprisingly, the bike assembly phase was a huge success as well. All told, the Lockheed Martin team donated 34 bikes to a great organization and left the workshop with teamwork skills they could take back to the office.
