When a group of music and physical education teachers get together for a Magnovo Bike-A-Thon™, they make a strong team whose work is music to everyone’s ears!
Prepping for a New School Year
As part of its pre-school year programming for employees, Rhythm and Moves hosts an annual team building program for staff. This year, the company also wanted their conference week activities to benefit local kids, too. And so we met 75 educators in school gym for a day-long Bike-A-Thon™. Because Rhythm and Moves serves dozens of schools in the Greater Bay Area, teachers don’t often get a chance to see each other. They’re always working out of different schools and classrooms. And so we opened with a few warm-up games. This also allowed us to easily accommodate a few latecomers because even on the best of days, city traffic is an issue.
A Bike-A-Thon™ to Benefit Bay Area Kids
The formal Bike-A-Thon™ kicked off as soon as everyone arrived. Rhythm and Moves had pre-selected each of the teams, and these folks were eager to get started. We gave each team some of the parts and tools they needed to assemble a bicycle. Then we invited them to compete for the rest. Friendly competition was clearly in play here. Teams pushed hard to win every game and challenge. It was a real race to see which group was going to earn all of the parts to assemble their bicycle first! Once a team was successful, they turned their attention to their co-workers, cheering them on as well, enthusiasm echoing off the gym walls.
Once the bikes were assembled, Rhythm and Moves teams were ready for the next important phase of their Bike-A-Thon™. Each team delivered its bike to a local child. Because teams had been pre-arranged, teams had already worked on a small presentation to accompany the interaction. The 12 children who received a bicycle that day were clearly pleased and very excited! During the debriefing session held at the end of the day, many people said that giving the children their new bicycles was the best part of the program.
Rhythm and Moves’ Team Building Success
Rhythm and Moves’ Bike-A-Thon™ primed the staff for a new school year. Educators had a chance to reconnect after several weeks away from work, and hone important soft skills that are critical for success. Teams practiced communication, problem solving, delegation, and conflict resolution through fast-paced and engaging activities that had the added benefit of helping others, too.
